If you have moss creeping out of every joint of your block-paved driveway, you are far from alone. The damp Leicestershire climate is perfect for moss, and once it gets established it spreads quickly. Moss removal from driveways in Leicester is one of the most common reasons we get a phone call.
Why moss loves block paving
Block paving has lots of joints, and joints hold moisture. Moss spores blow in on the wind, settle in the damp sand, and spring up overnight. Once a colony is established, the roots spread sideways under the surface, lifting and loosening the sand even further. Within a couple of seasons it can dominate the whole drive.
What does not work
Domestic salt or vinegar treatments will scorch the visible moss but they do not kill the spores or the deeper root system. Pressure washing alone will physically remove what you can see, but moss will be back within weeks because the spores below the surface have not been touched. You also risk blowing all the joint sand out at the same time.
The proper approach
We apply a professional biocide to the affected areas first and allow it to do its work. The biocide kills the moss, the spores and the algae together. We then come back and pressure wash the entire drive, lifting out the dead moss and giving the surface an even, clean finish. The final step is brushing in fresh kiln-dried sand.
How long until the moss comes back?
Done properly, you should get two or three years of clean joints before any noticeable moss returns. Drives in heavy shade may need an annual top-up biocide. Drives in full sun often go four years or more between cleans.
